Google’s Insights on Website Re-indexing

At Digital Sunbird, we recently came across a video released by Google that provides clarity on how a website owner can prompt Google to effect a total re-indexing of their website. This advice is particularly useful for instances where an overall alteration has taken place on a website, which consequently necessitates a complete site crawl for Google’s index to be appropriately updated.

How to Enable a Whole-Site Recrawl?

An approach to stimulating a full-site re-crawl was of interest to the individual who posed the question to Google. The inquiry brought forward was:

“Is there a procedure to commission a re-indexing of an entire website in one go?”

John Mueller, a representative from Google, clarified this question in his response:

“Regrettably, there isn’t. Currently, there’s no method available to initiate a re-crawl and reprocess of a whole website in one instance.”

Mueller elaborated further that upon making significant modifications on a website, search engines will typically update those autonomously over time. Therefore, no additional action is mandated from the site owner.

Steps to Update Site Index

Mueller also recommended additional measures that someone needing a re-indexing could implement:

  • Use 301 response codes to inform search engines that a webpage has been moved to a different location for the new pages to be found.
  • Apply 404 server response codes to signal search engines that a page no longer exists.
  • Highlight that Google tends to prioritize crawling vital pages of a website, such as the home page. Hence, linking important pages from key pages can be deemed a good strategy.
  • Significant changes such as updating telephone numbers should ideally be noted on the most important pages of a website.

Tips for Website Quality Re-evaluation

Implementing a 301 redirect is essential when a webpage’s URL changes. This server response prompts search engines that a certain page has permanently relocated to a new URL, thereby encouraging the search engine to locate the novel webpage for indexing.

If the content of a webpage also varies along with the URL, it can potentially activate a site quality re-evaluation. John Mueller, in a separate video released in 2021, mentioned the repercussions post a substantial website amendment:

“We would have to reconsider how to interpret the website if it undergoes a major restructuring where numerous links and URLs change. For instance, shifting from one CMS to another can result in such notable changes.”

“In such scenarios, we can’t rely on our previous perceptions of the webpages because all of it is different now. We need to rethink everything.”

Our team at Digital Sunbird advises our webmasters to be patient in these circumstances. The alterations and improvements you’ve made will eventually be detected and indexed by Google’s crawling system.

Remember, the ultimate goal is to provide impactful and valuable content to your visitors, which eventually helps in better visibility on search engines. Keep focusing on improving your website and leave the indexing work to Google.
